Thu at 1:30pm, Ruth Madievsky Author of All-Night Pharmacy. If you have 100Hz on the left channel and 140Hz on the right and you sum the two channels together you should see amplitude modulation at 40Hz.

Why look for amplitude modulation? If you take two sine waves, say 100Hz and 140Hz, their phases will align periodically (every 40Hz), producing peak amplitude when they're aligned and lower amplitude when they're out of phase. You can produce the difference by inverting the phase on one channel and then summing to mono. Using the difference instead of the sum will remove any sound that is constant on both channels, and might present a clearer view. There should be 40 peaks in a 1 second sample, and this should be consistent throughout most, if not all of the file. You could do this in a DAW by exporting a mono file and looking for evenly spaced amplitude peaks. To validate that a binaural beat exists, I think you would have to look for amplitude modulation at the target frequency on the sum (or difference) of the left and right channels. Pseudo-science or not, I think this is an interesting technical question. So far there is little to no actual evidence that they can consistently be used for brainwave entrainment to elicit specific states of mind. I make no claim that they'll actually do anything for you.

You can also do this using a synthesizer with two sine oscillators that can be detuned a specific number of Hz (not cents!) and panned hard left and right so it will generate the same beat frequency no matter which MIDI note you play.ĭisclaimer: I'm just telling you how to create binaural beats. Now, wearing headphones, the 220 Hz tone should be in your left ear and the 260 Hz tone should be in your right ear. Select both tracks that you've just created, then click on the top one and select "Make stereo track" from the menu. Now do it again but with frequency 260 Hz. It will generate a 220 Hz tone for that duration on a new track. Use waveform: Sine, frequency 220 Hz, amplitude 0.25, duration whatever, a couple minutes I guess. This is trivial to generate in Audacity, for example: Go to Generate > Tone. The "binaural beats" phenomenon occurs as the difference between two frequencies played in separate ears.
